Summar is an experienced respiratory physiotherapist and has a keen interest in respiratory health across the lifespan.
Upon Graduating BSc (Physiotherapy) from Curtin University in 2004, Summar began her postgraduate skills training at Fremantle Hospital General Medical wards, Thoracic Surgery and Intensive Care.
Following from her initial training in Adult services, Summar followed her passion for treating children and adolescents, taking up a position at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children in Perth. In her position as Senior Physiotherapist in Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy at Princess Margaret Hospital Summar facilitated treatment for all children with acute and chronic lung conditions admitted to the hospital wards or seen in outpatient clinics and outreach services. She has experience in treating a variety of acute and chronic lung conditions including Bronchiectasis, Cystic Fibrosis, Chronic Lung Disease of Prematurity, Chronic Suppurative Lung Disease, Bronchitis, Tracheomalacia and Bronchomalacia, post operative care and Paediatric Intensive Care.
Summar is accomplished in teaching age and ability appropriate techniques and creating Airway Clearance and Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs tailored for the individual, in the context of a holistic approach to lung health.
Therapy can include:
- PEP (Positive Expiratory Pressure) devices such as PEP mask, PARI Pep S, Bottle PEP
- Active Cycle of Breathing Techniques
- Forced Expiratory Techniques
- Autogenic Drainage and Modified Autogenic Drainage Technique
- Manual techniques such as Percussion and Vibration
- Positioning for optimal breathing
- Retraining of dysfunctional breathing
- Learning how to use/Reviewing technique for using your inhaled medications
- Exercise Assessment and Prescription.
Summar has 11yr old twins with additional needs and is a busy mum. Between coaching the school netball team and singing in the award winning barbershop chorus, A Capella West, and working as a Senior Physiotherapist in the Physiotherapy Respiratory team at Perth Children’s Hospital, we are lucky to have her be a part of our incredible Sportreat team!
